New Year, New Learning

January marked the beginning of a fresh start and new outlook on learning. We have wraped up our Biodiversty unit and moved onto the Solar System. Students are eager to explore and discuss all things space. With the passing of the amazing David Bowie, we used 'Space Oddity' as a vehicle to explore technological advancements in space since 1969 (the first landing on the moon). It was great to see the kids combing ideas and concepts (musical and science). Like MRS. GREN, the students learned a mnemonic device to help them remember the solar system. So many of the students earned a perfect score on their quiz and others were not far behind! Keep up the great work:) Moving along, we continue to explore the rocky planets, gas giants, day and night, phases of the moon, seasons, space technology and Canada's contributions to space.

Musically, we have begun the recorder. I aplogoize for any 'squeaks' that are occuring throughout your homes. Ear plugs or a sound proof basement might be a solid investment:) Students have been working on correct finger placement and breath control to help minimize squeaks for a happier home. Many have already earned their white recorder karate belts. Like Karate, students are able to earn a belt level when they master a song. We have co-constructed a success criteria, and have decided that to earn a belt they must recieve at least a level 3( +/-). A 3 allots for 2 squeaks and/or tempo issues, but all of the notes must be correct. A level 4 is earned when the songs has minor issues that do not affect the quality of the song (perhaps it was a bit rushed/ or a note was not held long enough). A 4+ is awarded if tempo and sound quality are amazing. For some of our musicians, the recorder has been played in the past. As their belts quickly compile they will be encouraged to practice the advance songs listed on the websites under assignments.

Thanks for checking in!
